Not all fires are accidents. Fortunately, blazes that are intentionally set often leave behind tell-tale clues.
Here are 12 signs to look for to help determine if a fire was intentional.
- There are multiple, unconnected fires and/or evidence of fire “trailers” – accelerant or flammable materials that suggest a concerted effort to spread the fire
- Ignitable liquids are present in the area of origin
- Contents and/or pets were removed prior to the fire
- Time of fire or weather conditions may have impeded fire department response
- Utilities – water, electric, gas – are not connected/on
- There are minimal or no personal items such as clothes, photos and toiletries
- The fire is near a major appliance and staged to look accidental
- Entry is blocked to prevent firefighters from entering
- Views into the property are obstructed to delay discovery until it is too late
- The fire occurs during renovations/sale of property or foreclosure
- The fire occurs in a dwelling with occupancy issues
- The insured has a history of past fires
